Thousands on alert as Victoria records seven new Covid cases

Victoria has recorded seven new Covid-19 cases, stemming from two chains of transmission, linked to an apartment complex.

The seven new cases were announced by the state's Covid-19 commander Jeroen Weimar and comes after Victoria reported one new case to midnight on Tuesday.

The state was on high alert after two removalists from Sydney travelled to Victoria and later tested positive for Covid-19.

The removalist picked up something from the third floor at the Ariele Apartments on Thomas Holmes Street in Maribyrnong, resulting in a lockdown for all residents and visitors.

More than 120 residents and 11 visitors of the Ariele Apartments are now in quarantine or 14 days.

Four of the residents in the apartment building have tested positive, all of which are on the third floor.

Among the four cases linked to the apartment complex is a man aged in his 60s. His parents aged in their 80s, who live in Craigieburn, have also tested positive.

The man visited the MCG for the Carlton and Geelong match on Saturday and was seated in level two of the MCC section of the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Weimar said authorities have identified over 2000 people at the in the members reserve at the game.

He also visited Highpoint shopping centre and Victoria has identified several new exposure sites.

"At this point in time, I would encourage any members of the community who have been in the Highpoint shopping centre on Friday, the ninth of July, between 10am and 2pm to please come forward and get tested," Weimar said on Wednesday.

"This is clearly a very rapidly moving situation. We're very keen to make sure we get a very firm grip of this, as soon as we possibly can."

The seventh case announced on Wednesday is a man aged in his 30s, who was at the Coles in Craigieburn at the same times as a member of the family who returned from Sydney and tested positive.

The family, who live in the local government area of Hume, tested negative shortly after arrival but two became symptomatic and were tested again on Sunday, returning positive results on Monday morning.

A third family member tested positive on Tuesday, while the fourth tested positive on Wednesday.

The seven new cases will be counted in Thursday's numbers.
