'Winter won't go away': Snow, frost and rain to hit southeast

Brrr! It seems Old Man Winter has woken up and he’s brought a cold snap which could see some parts of Australia drop by 10 degrees.

Polar air from Antarctica will sweep across south-east Australia over the next 24 hours, dropping temperatures along with snow and frost.

Parts of Victoria, NSW and the ACT will possibly be waking to a dusting of spring snow on Tuesday morning, with a cold snap and gusty winds forecast.

"It is possible that we may see snow in places like Goulburn and parts of the Central Tablelands, parts of the hills in Canberra, and then possibly stretching out to towns such as Armidale and Glen Innes," Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jackson Browne said on Monday.

"The front is pretty mobile so it blows off the fast northeastern parts of NSW during the course of Wednesday."

Sky News Weather chief meteorologist Tom Saunders said it is due to winds blowing from the south off the Antarctic ice sheet. He called it a "major cold outbreak".

"It's just as cold as it would be in the middle of winter," Mr Saunders said, warning a cold night on Tuesday will result in frost on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, particularly inland in NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

Temperatures to drop across five states and territories

Sydney is in for a chilly and somewhat wet middle part of the week with tops of 18 and 21 on Tuesday and Wednesday forecast, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Some parts of Sydney got as hot as 27 on Monday.

Canberra is also in for a drop in temperature, with tops of 14 and 17 on Tuesday and Wednesday. It could also plummet below zero on Wednesday.

Melbourne won’t be spared the spring chill either with a top of just 13 on Tuesday and 18 on Wednesday, while Adelaide will only be slightly warmer with a maximums of 15 and 17 across the two days.

Tasmania will also drop to a max of 14 on Tuesday and 19 on Wednesday.

“Winter just won't go away,” the BOM tweeted.

WeatherZone meteorologist Ben Domensino tweeted snow could also hit 500 metres in Victoria, 600m in southern NSW, 800m in Central NSW and 1000m in northern NSW.

Warmer temperatures return later in the week

Temperatures should return to average around Wednesday, Mr Saunders said.

"The thing about cold weather in September, it rarely lasts more than one or two days," he said.

BOM tweeted there is a chance of thunderstorms and small hail.

Any showers across NSW are expected to clear on Wednesday.

Potentially damaging wind conditions will hamper much of NSW and the ACT until Tuesday, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning the system has the potential to bring down trees and powerlines.

The NSW State Emergency Service is urging people to clean-up loose items around their properties and reconsider boating or rock fishing.

There will be more strong winds, after the cold front, which will develop along much of the coast, whipping up hazardous surf conditions in areas between Sydney and Port Macquarie.
