Graham Arnold captured in brutal spray for Mat Ryan at World Cup
Socceroos coach Graham Arnold has sparked an interesting debate among football fans after footage of him blowing up at goalkeeper Mat Ryan emerged following the FIFA World Cup win over Tunisia. Vision showed Arnold furiously gesturing for Ryan to join his teammates in celebrating Mitch Duke's first half goal.
Arnold appeared absolutely apoplectic as Ryan remained close to goal with the rest of the Socceroos mobbing Duke, who would eventually proved to be the hero in the 1-0 victory. The win marked Australia's third win in national history at the World Cup, and crucially gives them a chance to move on to the next stage on merit.

The victory clearly meant a lot to Arnold after a deluge of criticism following the Socceroos 4-1 drubbing at the hands of France to begin their World Cup campaign in Qatar.
Aussie fans erupted in unison with Arnold when Duke put the Socceroos ahead on the 23rd minute, but footage from the BBC showed the Aussie coach's attitude quickly changing when he spotted Ryan. His elation quickly turned to fury as he gestured for Ryan to join the rest of the team - although some fans pointed out this risked the Socceroos not having their keeper in the back half when the ball was kicked off again.
Arnold made some curious comments after the game about maintaining focus after such an emotional moment for the team, saying it was important for them to imagine they hadn't scored at all, and play with the same desperation.
“I don’t think, I know, the next five minutes after a goal is scored is so important,” he said. “You’ve got to continue playing, if you celebrate that goal emotionally, that’s when you can concede.
“It’s about keeping switched on with no celebration at all and going for the second goal straight away.”
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Mat Ryan produced a top performance to keep a clean sheet & help Australia to a massive 1-0 win over Tunisia in their World Cup group stage match this afternoon, their first clean sheet at the tournament since 1974. 🤯
Love it, @MatyRyan! 💪 #afc pic.twitter.com/Sz3UUOjJmd— afcstuff (@afcstuff) November 26, 2022
You can feel the anxiety in the stadium. This is intense. Stoke's Harry Souttar has been absolutely immense.
If Australia hold on, they have him and Mat Ryan to thank for a lot of it. #TUNAUS— Deng D’Aleer (@Denggiet1) November 26, 2022

Graham Arnold is worked wonders with the Socceroos🇦🇺
Loved the huddle at the end with the injured Boyle alongside him. Great man management

For his part, Duke echoed Arnold's message. “We wanted to have an aggressive approach and run them over,” he said. "The message from Arnie (after the goal) was the same one he gave at halftime - run yourself into the ground. We’ll make five subs and those players will do the same when they come on.”
Players back Graham Arnold to remain Socceroos coach
Arnold's contract expires at the end of the cup in Qatar, with the 59-year-old non-committal about his future, but he is making a compelling case to be offered a fresh contract after becoming the first Australian-born coach to lead the Socceroos to a World Cup win.
Australia's 1-0 triumph against Tunisia in Doha has placed the nation on the cusp of qualifying for the knockout phases of the cup for only the second time.
Beat or draw with Denmark on Wednesday (0200 AEDT Thursday) and Arnold will join his Dutch-born mentor Guus Hiddink in 2006 in steering the Socceroos out of their group.
"That's completely on him to see if he wants to continue," Duke told reporters. "But for me, personally, I have obviously loved working under Arnie.
"I love the way he coaches, I love the atmosphere he creates in camp and if that he wanted to do that, to continue on, I back him 100 per cent. But that is obviously an individual thing for him.
"He has been doing it for this whole journey, it has not been easy. But I am sure every lad in this team would like to see him continue on."
