The UFC world has been left stunned after veteran Jacare Souza's arm was broken in a horrific injury in his loss to Andre Muniz.

Souza, one of the great grappler's in MMA history, found himself in an awkward position against the much younger Muniz.

With a minute left in the first round, Muniz grabbed hold of Souza's arm.

Souza attempted to escape as Muniz was flipped upside down holding onto the Brazilian.

But in a sickening twist, Muniz applied the pressure and appeared to snap the arm of Souza.

"Oh my goodness," Joe Rogan said in commentary after realising the damage.

The UFC world were equally as shocked at the 'gruesome' injury.

Souza appears 'bizarrely' ok after arm break

Despite having his arm snap, Souza showed his toughness and appeared ok, as far as broken arms go, following the bout.

Muniz said he didn't want to hurt his "idol" when he locked in the armbar and let go before doing further damage.

"To submit a legend...like Jacare it's unbelievable," he said following the fight.

"I have no words to describe what I'm feeling right now just wanted to wish a speedy recovery for Jacare."

Souza went nearly 18 years without being submitted in MMA, but the run came to a gruesome end on the weekend.

The match was on the main card of main event between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler for the lightweight championship.
